Galileo’s Universe

Galileo’s Universe

The Milky Way is the galaxy that contains the Earth. This name derives from ist appearance as a dim „milky“ glowing band arching across the night sky, in which the naked eye cannot distinguish individual stars. The Milky Way appears like a band because it is a diskshaped structure being viewed from inside. The fact that this faint band of light is made up of stars was proven in 1610 when Galileo Galilei used his telescope to resolve it into individual stars. Galileo observed the Milky Way and found it to be a multitude of stars packed so densely that they appeared to be clouds from Earth. Galileo Galilei was 19 when he discovered the law of the pendulum by using his pulse to time the swinging motion of the chandelier in the cathedral of Pisa. His observation made possible the first weight-driven pendulum clocks. A revolution had begun.
