Titanic-Heroes
This second TITANIC collection features the heroes of this fatal day, especially Captain Edward J. Smith, the ship’s band, who heroically played on while the great steamer was sinking, the memorial to engineers in Southampton, but also the famous Molly Brown. About 1500 passengers including ship personnel were killed in the disaster on April 14, 1912, when the British luxury passenger liner Titanic sank en route to New York City from Southampton after a collision with a huge iceberg. The high casualty rate resulting from the sinking was due in part to the fact that, although complying with the regulations of the time, the ship carried lifeboats for only 1,178 people. A disproportionate number of men died due to the „women and children first“ protocol that was enforced by the ship’s crew. (Margaret) Molly Brown, an American socialite, philanthropist and activist, was dubbed „The Unsinkable Molly Brown“ by historians because she helped in the ship’s evacuation, taking an oar herself in her lifeboat and protesting for the lifeboat to go back to try to save more people. After steaming at full speed (32.4 km/h) for just under four hours, RMS Carpathia arrived in the area and began rescuing survivors. Molly Brown was elected to give Captain Arthur Henry Rostron RMS Carpathia an award for his service in the rescue of Titanic’s surviving passengers.
